Aboriginal Art
As one of the oldest art traditions in the world, Australian aboriginal art dates back to 39,000 years. It has and still is solely involved with "Dreaming", a set of genesis theories specific and essential to the aboriginal spirituality. The revitalization of aboriginal art in 70s' has since stormed it to the frontier of contemporary art. What fascinates collectors is that although the aesthetic of aboriginal art echoes strangely well with the modern art movement in the west, it took shape completely on its own in a completely isolated context. Furthermore, what embedded within the dots, lines and cycles are a vast range of sacred symbolism that encodes the ancestral stories, ritual messages, topographic maps and even practical knowledge such as water and food. Strikingly modern yet mysteriously complex, Aboriginal art defies being categorized within a western-minded grid as neither tribal, outside, nor contemporary art. It is of its own genre and commands not only visual, but also conceptual attention. |
